John Early

John Early (born March 17, 1828 in Essex County , Ontario , Canada ; died September 2, 1877 in Rockford , Illinois , USA ) was a Canadian-American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he was acting lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

John Early on March 17, 1828 Essex County in the Canadian province of Ontario born. He grew up on a farm and attended elementary school. At the age of 18, he moved to Boone County , United States with his parents . In 1852 the family moved to Rockford , where he lived until his death in 1877.

Early initially worked as a carpenter and carpenter until he took a job as an insurance agent for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1865 . Early spoke out against slavery and has been a member of the Republican Party since it was founded in 1854 . He was also a member of the Illinois Senate from 1870 until his death in 1877 and was its President in 1873.

In January 1873, Governor Richard James Oglesby resigned from office to join the US Senate . The governor's office then fell to his deputy, Lieutenant Governor John Lourie Beveridge . According to the constitution, the chairman of the state senate, John Early, had to take over the office of vice governor on a provisional basis. He practiced it between January 23, 1873 and January 8, 1875. That was half of Beveridge's tenure as governor. He was then succeeded by Archibald Glenn , who became the new chairman of the Senate and thus temporarily held the position of Vice Governor until January 1877.

John Early died on September 2, 1877 while on treatment for tuberculosis from which he had long suffered.
