Sheila J. Simon (born March 13, 1961 ) is an American politician with the Democratic Party . From 2011 to 2015 she was Vice Governor of the State of Illinois .

Career

Sheila Simon is the daughter of former U.S. Senator and Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, Paul Simon . In 1983 she graduated from Wittenberg University in Ohio . After completing a law degree at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar, she began practicing this profession. Among other things, she worked in a team in a clinic dealing with litigation costs. Between 1987 and 1992 she worked for the Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation . From 1994 to 1998, she was the assistant district attorney in Jackson County . She also served on the law school of Southern Illinois University from 2000 to 2010 . From 1998 to 2000 she was one of the legal representatives of this university. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . Between 2003 and 2007 she was a member of the Carbondale parish council .

In 2010, Simon was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside Pat Quinn . She has held this office since January 10, 2011. She is Deputy Governor . In the gubernatorial election in November 2014, she no longer wants to run as Vice-Governor of Governor Quinn. Paul Vallas was nominated in her place as the new runner-up candidate . Instead, Simon sought the office of State Comptroller ; an election that she lost to the Republican incumbent Judy BaarTopinka . Since Governor Quinn also lost his re-election, the vice-candidate of the newly elected Prime Minister Bruce Rauner , the Republican Evelyn Sanguinetti , was elected as her successor, who she then replaced on January 12, 2015.

Since 1987 she has been married to the university professor Perry Knop, with whom she has two daughters.
