Evelyn Sanguinetti (* 12. November 1970 in Miami , Florida ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She was Lieutenant Governor of Illinois from 2015 to 2019 .

Life

Sanguinetti was born in Miami in 1970 as the daughter of an Ecuadorian immigrant and a Cuban exile . She studied music at Florida International University , which she successfully completed with a bachelor's degree. She later moved to Chicago and studied law there. After studying the Republican belonged as an assistant to the staff of the then Attorney General of Illinois, Jim Ryan , to before 2011 in Wheaton , Illinois in the City Council was elected.

In the run-up to the Illinois gubernatorial election in 2014, Republican candidate Bruce Rauner selected her as his running mate , his candidate for the post of lieutenant governor . In March 2014, Rauner and Sanguinetti were able to prevail in the republican primary elections and were thus nominated as the party's candidates for the gubernatorial election in November 2014. In this election, the duo of Rauner and Sanguinetti won over the democratic incumbent Pat Quinn and his vice-candidate Paul Vallas with 50.3 against 46.3 percent of the votes. Evelyn Sanguinetti was elected as the state's first Hispanic lieutenant governor.

Immediately after the election victory, she appointed Rauner as chief coordinator for handing over the business of government. On January 12, 2015, she, like Rauner, was sworn in for her new office. Since then she has been the governor's deputy. For the gubernatorial election in autumn 2018 she acted again as Rauner's running mate, but both were subject to the democratic ticket from JB Pritzker and Juliana Stratton . As a result, her term of office as Vice Governor ended in January 2019.

After Sanguinetti announced in April 2019 that she was running for the seat of the 6th constituency of Illinois in the 2020 House of Representatives elections against the Democratic incumbent Sean Casten , she withdrew her candidacy in October 2019. The reason given was insufficient donation income for their campaign.

Sanguinetti is married.
