Juliana Stratton (* 8. September 1965 in Chicago as Juliana Wiggins ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , and since January 14, 2019 Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois . She previously served in the Illinois House of Representatives since 2017 .

Life

Juliana Stratton grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the daughter of a doctor and a teacher. She later attended the University of Illinois and did a Bachelor of Science there . After she graduated from the DuPaul University with a degree in law . She then worked as a lawyer , most recently at a law firm specializing in mediation . From 2015 she was employed at the University of Illinois as the director of law and security. She was politically active in the Democratic Party and ran for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 2016. In the Democratic primary , she triumphed over incumbent Kenneth Dunkin and was elected MP in November 2016. In August 2017, she accepted an offer from JB Pritzker , a candidate for governorship, to run as his lieutenant governor . Pritzker and Stratton prevailed in the Democratic primary in March 2018 and were thus nominated as candidates for the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018. In this vote, the two won with 54% of the vote over the Republican incumbent Bruce Rauner and his running mate Evelyn Sanguinetti . Pritzker and Stratton were sworn in for their new offices on January 14, 2019. Stratton is the first African American woman to hold this post.

Juliana Stratton is married and has three children. Her hobbies include running marathons and triathlons .
