Sherwood Dixon

John Sherwood Dixon (born June 19, 1896 in Dixon , Illinois , †  May 17, 1973 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

Nothing is known about Sherwood Dixon's youth and schooling. He was a soldier in the American armed forces during World War I and was a member of the Illinois National Guard. During the Second World War he also served in the United States Army . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1938 he sat on the state board of his party. In 1940, 1952 and 1956 he was a delegate or substitute delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In 1948, Dixon was elected lieutenant governor of Illinois alongside Adlai Stevenson . He held this office between January 10, 1949 and January 12, 1953. He was Deputy Governor . In 1952 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of his state. He died on May 17, 1973 in his hometown of Dixon.
