The office of lieutenant governor ( Lieutenant Governor ) in the US state Texas was created after the accession of the state to the union in the year 1845. The respective incumbent is the governor's first successor if the governor resigns, dies or is removed from his post. Long-time Governor Rick Perry was and took office under George W. Bush when he became President of the United States in 2001 .

The Vice-Governor also presides over the State Senate as President. The governor and lieutenant governor are not elected together, which is why it is entirely possible that both incumbents belong to different parties. If there is a vacancy in the office of lieutenant governor, the Senate elects a new president, who then acts ex officio as lieutenant governor.
