Barry Miller (born December 25, 1864 in Barnwell , Barnwell County , South Carolina , †  June 20, 1933 in Dallas County , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

Barry Miller was born in South Carolina and grew up in the federal capital Washington, DC , where he was temporarily employed as a page in the United States Senate . In the meantime he also worked in the Washington Post printing company . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer, he worked in this profession from 1882 in Dallas , where he had moved that year. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1899 and 1903 he was a member of the Texas Senate ; from 1917 to 1923 he was a member of the House of Representatives there. During his tenure in the Senate, he was President Pro Tempore and acting chairman of this body. He was three-time campaign manager for Charles Allen Culberson , who represented the state of Texas in both chambers of Congress and was also the governor of Texas.

Between 1911 and 1915, Miller served as a judge in the Dallas County Criminal Court. In 1924 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas at the side of Miriam A. Ferguson . He held this office after two re-elections between 1925 and 1931. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. From 1927 he served under the new governor Dan Moody . In 1930 Miller unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections. He died in Dallas County on June 20, 1933.
