John Alexander Greer

John Alexander Greer (born July 18, 1802 in Shelbyville , Bedford County , Tennessee , †  July 4, 1855 in San Augustine , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1851 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

John Greer was born in Tennessee and later lived in Kentucky for a while before moving to Texas, which was then part of Mexico , in 1830 . There he ran a farm northwest of the city of San Augustine. After gaining independence from Mexico, Texas was a separate and independent republic between 1836 and 1845. Greer sat in the Senate there between 1837 and 1845. In 1845 he succeeded William Beck Ochiltree as Treasury Secretary of the Republic of Texas .

After the annexation of the republic to the United States, Greer became second lieutenant governor of the new state in 1847 as a member of the Democratic Party . He held this office between 1847 and 1851. He was the deputy of Governor George T. Wood and then of his successor Peter Hansborough Bell . At the same time he acted as chairman of the state senate . In 1855, Greer ran for governor. He died during the election campaign on July 4th of that year in San Augustine. Greer was also a member of the Freemasons ,
