Bob Bullock

Robert Douglas "Bob" Bullock Sr. (born July 10, 1929 in Hillsboro , Texas , †  June 18, 1999 in Austin , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1991 and 1999 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Life

Bob Bullock graduated from his native Hill College and then studied at Texas Tech University until 1955 . After studying law at Baylor University , he was admitted to the bar. Between 1951 and 1954 he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War . In the meantime he struggled with alcohol problems. He was able to get rid of this addiction in 1981. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1956 and 1960 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives . In 1971 and 1972 he was Secretary of State of Texas; from 1975 to 1990 he was Comptroller of Public Accounts there . In 1978 he was charged with an unspecified offense but acquitted.

In 1990, Bullock was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas alongside Ann Richards . He held this office after a re-election between 1991 and 1999. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Since 1995, he served under Republican Governor George W. Bush . He died in Austin on June 18, 1999, six months after he ended his tenure as lieutenant governor.
