William P. Hobby

William Pettus "Bill" Hobby Jr. (born January 19, 1932 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1973 and 1991 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

William Hobby is the son of William P. Hobby Sr. (1878-1964), who was Governor of Texas between 1917 and 1921 . His mother Oveta Culp Hobby (1905-1995) was the United States Secretary of Health between 1953 and 1955 . His grandfather Edwin Hobby was also active as a state senator in politics between 1874 and 1879 . The younger hobby studied until 1953 at Rice University and then served until 1957 in the United States Navy , where he worked in the secret service. He then worked in the newspaper business for the Houston Post newspaper , which was owned by his family. After the death of his father, he took over the management of this newspaper until it was sold in 1983. Like his father, he became a member of the Democratic Party . It is worth noting that his mother was a member of the Republican Party . Until 1971 he held various positions at the state and federal level. Among other things, he was a member of the Texas Air Control Board .

In 1972, Hobby was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas alongside Dolph Briscoe . He held this office after several re-elections between 1973 and 1991. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He also held this position under Briscoe's successors, Bill Clements and Mark White . Right at the beginning of his first term in office, a reform of the state constitution extended the term of office of the lieutenant governor from two to four years. He was the last lieutenant governor of Texas to serve a two-year term and the first to serve a four-year term. As lieutenant governor, he held various other government offices in addition to presiding over the Senate. He chaired several committees and in 1974 was chairman of the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors .

Between 1995 and 1997, William Hobby was Chancellor of the University of Houston System . He was or is a board member of several companies. He is also a member of various organizations and associations.
