David Henry Dewhurst (born August 18, 1945 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2015 he was the lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

After high school, David Dewhurst studied at the University of Arizona . He later became a successful businessman and rancher. He served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force and worked intermittently for the CIA and the US State Department . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1999 and 2003, he succeeded Garry Mauro in the position of Texas Land Commissioner , which is considered a stepping stone to higher offices.

In November 2002, Dewhurst was elected lieutenant governor of Texas alongside Rick Perry . He has held this office since 2003 after two re-elections. He is Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 2012 he ran for his party's nomination for the US Senate election , which went to Ted Cruz . In 2014, he sought another candidacy for the office of vice governor. But he was defeated in the primary elections of his party in March of that year to the State Senator Dan Patrick , who was then also elected as deputy to the new governor Greg Abbott in November . This ended his tenure as Lieutenant Governor on January 20, 2015.
