George Taylor Jester

George Taylor Jester (born August 23, 1847 in Macoupin County , Illinois , †  July 19, 1922 in Corsicana , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

After his father's death in 1858, George Jester moved with his mother and siblings to Corsicana, Texas, where his maternal grandfather lived. He attended a day school and helped build the Navarro County Courthouse . In the spring of 1865, just before the end of the civil war, he joined the Confederation Army . But he did not get to fight any more. In 1866 he was a traveling dealer and in 1867 he became a shop clerk in Corsicana. Between 1870 and 1881 he worked in the cotton trade. He bought land himself and kept dairy cows. He also experimented with growing cotton. From 1881 he worked in the banking industry. He was involved in the founding of the Corsicana National Bank and became its president in 1887.

Politically, Jester joined the Democratic Party . In 1891 and 1892 he sat in the Texas House of Representatives , where he was a member of several committees; from 1893 to 1894 he was a member of the State Senate , where he headed the Finance Committee. In 1894 Jester was elected lieutenant governor of Texas alongside Charles Allen Culberson . He held this office between 1895 and 1899. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he worked again in the banking industry in Corsicana. He died there on July 19, 1922. His son Beauford (1893-1949) was Governor of Texas from 1947 to 1949 .
