Corsicana is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Navarro County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is centrally located in the county in east Texas and has a total area of 65.2 km 2 , of which 2.5 km 2 is water.
history
The place was founded in 1848 and named after the island of Corsica , the birthplace of the parents of José Antonio Navarro , a hero of the Texan Revolution and after whom the county was named.
The first public school was established in 1847 in the former courthouse, a two-room log house. In 1850 the city registered 1200 inhabitants, 300 of whom were slaves. The first newspaper, the Prairie Blade , was published in 1855. The construction of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1871 brought an economic boom after the connection to the Texas and St. Louis Railway in 1880, the city developed into the leading trading and freight center for the whole area and in 1885 the population was around 5,000 gone up.
In 1894, the first significant oil discovery west of the Mississippi resulted in the first oil boom in Texas. The first refinery was built in 1897 and a year later 287 oil pumps were in operation and in 1900 the city had over 9,000 inhabitants.

Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 24,485 people in 8,762 households and 5,966 families lived here. The population density was 455.8 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 59.28% White, 23.59% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.47% Pacific Islander, and 13.64% non-American ethnic groups. About 1.91% were mixed race and 22.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,762 households, 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6% of these were married couples living together. 15.0% were single mothers and 31.9% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.21.
27.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 12.6% 18 to 24, 26.6% 25 to 44, 18.6% 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,203 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,078. Males had a median income of $ 27,516 versus $ 19,844 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,001. 22.3% of the population and 17.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 29.4% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.1% were 65 or older.
