Benny Frank "Ben" Barnes (born April 17, 1938 in Gorman , Eastland County , Texas ) is a former American politician . Between 1969 and 1973 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

After high school, Ben Barnes attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and Tarleton College in Stephenville . This was followed by studies at the University of Texas . He worked for his state's Ministry of Health and became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1963 and 1969 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from Texas , whose speaker he was since 1965 as the successor to Byron M. Tunnell . He was also a member and chairman of several committees.

In 1968, Barnes was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas alongside Preston Smith . He held this office after a re-election between 1969 and 1973. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1971, he was linked to a political scandal that he had nothing to do with. Even so, this false association hurt him in his attempt to be elected governor in 1972.

After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Barnes worked successfully in the real estate industry and as a lobbyist. In the 1980s, the economic situation caused him to experience financial turmoil, from which he soon recovered. He continued to work for the Democrats and was deputy campaign manager for John Kerry in his unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2004. He was one of eight people who raised over $ 500,000 in donations for Kerry's campaign. Barnes is still active in the lobbying industry to this day.
