William Harding Mayes

William Harding Mayes (born May 20, 1861 in Mayfield , Kentucky , †  June 26, 1939 in Austin , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

William Mayes attended the Paducah District Methodist College in Milburn and Norton's English and Classical School in Union City ( Tennessee ). He then studied at Vanderbilt University . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1881, he first worked in his hometown Mayfield and from 1882 in Brownwood (Texas) to work in this profession. He was a district attorney in Brown County in 1882 and 1883 . He also worked in the newspaper industry and published the Brownwood Bulletin between 1887 and 1914 .

Politically, Mayes joined the Democratic Party . In 1912 he was elected lieutenant governor of Texas alongside Oscar Branch Colquitt . He held this office between 1913 and 1915. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Mayes also founded the journalism faculty at the University of Texas , serving as its dean for twelve years. He was also president of the Association of American Schools and Departments of Journalism . He died in Austin on June 26, 1939.
