Brownwood is the county seat of Brown County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the junction of US Highways 67 , 84 and 377 , Highway 2524 and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in the south of the county, exactly on the geographic center of Texas, and has a total area of 32.6 km² with no significant Water surface.
history
The city, like the county, was named after Henry Stevenson Brown , commander of the Battle of Velasco . The first post office was opened in 1858, and in 1872 Brownwood was a small settlement with two general stores, a log cabin serving as a district court, and five residential buildings. In 1876, after the place had three churches and 120 residents, a bank was opened and a school building was built. A year later, the Texas state officially began selling land. In 1885 the first newspaper appeared with the Brownwood Daily Bee and the city got a connection to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad . In 1891 a connection to the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad was added.
In 1900 the population had grown to 3965 people and had become a hub for the cotton grown in the area. In 1910 the city had 6967 inhabitants and in 1920 it had 8223 inhabitants. Oil discoveries brought new immigrants and in 1930 the city had 12,789 inhabitants. In 1940 the Camp Bowie military camp was built near the city , but it was closed again in 1946.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 18,813 people in 7,110 households and 4,664 families lived here. The population density was 576.5 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 82.74% White, 5.51% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 8.47% other ethnic groups. About 2.07% were mixed race and 21.34% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,110 households, 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.5% of these were married couples living together. 13.7% were single mothers and 34.4% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.05.
27.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 12.8% 18 to 24, 24.3% 25 to 44, 19.2% 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 90.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 84.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 27,325 USD , and the median income for a family 33,991 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,090 versus $ 18,905 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,158. 21.4% of the population and 18.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 28.9% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.8% were 65 or older.
