John McClannahan Crockett
John McClannahan Crockett (born December 26, 1816 in Lancaster , Lancaster County , South Carolina , † August 4, 1887 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.
Career
John Crockett graduated from Franklin Academy in Lancaster, the city of his birth, and then worked in commerce in Camden . In 1836 he moved to Obion County , Tennessee , where he and a partner ran a merchandise store. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1844, he began to work in this profession. In 1847 he moved to Paris , Texas, where he worked as an accountant for a few months. The following year he moved to Dallas and practiced as a lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He initially held a few local offices before he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1851 . He was mayor of Dallas between 1857 and 1860 . In 1859 he was also a weather observer in Dallas for the Smithsonian Institution .
In 1860, Crockett was elected lieutenant governor of Texas alongside Francis Lubbock . He held this office between 1861 and 1863. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . This time was marked by the events of the civil war . Texas and Crockett were in the Confederate camp . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Crockett became head of an arms factory in Lancaster, Texas. In 1872 he helped found the Dallas Grain, Elevator, and Flouring Company . He was a member of several organizations and associations, including the Freemasons . John Crockett died in Dallas on August 4, 1887.
