Ben Ramsey

Ben Ramsey (born December 28, 1903 in San Augustine , San Augustine County , Texas , †  March 27, 1985 in Austin , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1963 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Texas.

Career

Ben Ramsey attended the public schools in his home country and worked on the family farm. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Texas and his admission to the bar in 1931, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1931 and 1935 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Texas ; from 1941 to 1949 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1949 and 1950 he held the office of Secretary of State of Texas.

In 1950, Ramsey was elected lieutenant governor of his state alongside Allan Shivers . He held this office after five re-elections between 1951 and 1963. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. From 1957 he served under the new Governor Price Daniel . Ramsey became a member of the Democratic National Committee and was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1956 and 1964. Between 1961 and 1977 he held the office of Railroad Commissioner of Texas. He then retired. He died in Austin on March 27, 1985.
