William Beck Ochiltree

William Beck Ochiltree (born October 18, 1811 in Fayetteville , North Carolina , †  December 27, 1867 in Jefferson , Texas ) was an American settler, judge and politician in Texas.

Career

Ochiltree's family lived for some time in Florida and later in Alabama , where he began practicing as a lawyer. He then moved to Nacogdoches in the Republic of Texas in 1839 and continued his practice there as a lawyer. Subsequently he was judge of the fifth judicial district, 1844 Minister of Finance ( Secretary of the Treasury ) of the Republic, 1845 Adjutant General , and delegate to the Convention of 1845.

After Texas joined the United States, he ran as Whig for governor in 1853 , but was defeated by Democrat Elisha M. Pease . In 1855 he was elected to the Sixth Texas House of Representatives. In the run-up to the Civil War , Ochiltree took part in the Texan Secession Convention of 1861; then he became a deputy in the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States of America . He resigned after a short time, returned to Texas and joined a regiment . His poor health forced him to resign in 1863. He then lived in Jefferson until his death.
