James Hervey Witherspoon junior

James Hervey Witherspoon, Jr. (* 23. March 1810 in Lancaster County , South Carolina , † 3. October 1865 in Lancaster , Lancaster County, South Carolina) was a politician of the Confederate States . In the years 1864 and 1865 he was a member of their 2nd Congress .

Career

James Witherspoon Jr. was the son of the same name James Witherspoon (politician) (1784-1842), who was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina between 1826 and 1828, and his wife Jane Donnom Witherspoon (1786-1834). His brother Isaac (1803-1858) was also lieutenant governor of South Carolina between 1842 and 1844. Nothing is known about his youth. He must have studied law, however, because he worked as a judge for 16 years and served the judiciary for 21 years (commissoned in the equity for 21 years). During the American Civil War he served in the Confederation Army in which he commanded the 8th South Carolina State Reserves Regiment as Colonel . In 1864 and 1865 he represented his state in the Confederate House of Representatives in Richmond .

James Witherspoon was married to Mary Elizabeth Jones Witherspoon (1811-1856), with whom he had the son Bartlett Jones Witherspoon (1832-1905) and the daughter Eliza Jones Witherspoon Wylie (1834-1909). He died on October 3, 1865 in Lancaster, South Carolina, where he was also buried.
