Lac Memphrémagog ( English Lake Memphremagog ) is a lake of glacial origin between the cities of Newport in Vermont (USA) and Magog in Québec (Canada).
The lake has a length of 44 km. 73% of the lake area is in the Canadian province of Québec. There is its outlet, the Rivière Magog , a tributary of the Rivière Saint-François . Three quarters of the catchment area is in the US state of Vermont.
In Vermont, the cities of Derby and Newport share the lake area, both in Orleans County .
In Québec, the lake is divided into the towns of Austin , Magog , Ogden , Potton , Saint-Benoît-du-Lac and Stanstead Township , all in the regional county town of Memphrémagog .
The water level is at 207 m . The maximum water depth is 87 m. There are 20 islands in the lake. The 31 hectare Île de la Province (or Province Island ) is the largest island in the lake. The international border runs through them.
The Barrage du Memphrémagog dam is located at the outflow of Lac Memphrémagog. It was built in 1920, is 9 m high and 55 m wide.
The associated hydroelectric power station Centrale Memphrémagog has two turbines with a total output of 1.9 MW.
The name "Memphremagog" is derived from the Algonquin word for "where there is a large expanse of water".
ecology
Like many other lakes, Lac Memphrémagog is affected by phosphate accumulation, sediments and other pollution. Various measures have been taken since the 1970s to improve the water quality of Lac Memphrémagog. In 1994 the Lake Memphremagog Watershed Association was established for this purpose .
Hydrology
Four rivers in Vermont flow directly into the lake: Clyde River , Barton River , Black River, and Johns River .
The lake freezes in winter and reaches ice thicknesses of up to one meter.
Lighthouses
There used to be three lighthouses on Lac Memphrémagog that helped the boats navigate the lake. These three lighthouses, Maxfield Point Light , Newport Wharf Light and Whipple Point Light , no longer exist today.
