Vera Martha Winitzky de Spinadel (born August 22, 1929 - † January 26, 2017 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was an Argentine mathematician .

Life

Vera W. de Spinadel and Erico Spinadel (2015)

Vera de Spinadel studied at the University of Buenos Aires , received her degree in mathematics in 1952, also completed courses in meteorology and reactor engineering (1955) and received her doctorate in 1958 (as the first woman in mathematics at the university). She was an assistant there from 1952 and taught from 1957, initially as a temporary adjunct professor and from 1962 as a regular professor with alternating other professorial positions. From 1982 she was a mathematics professor in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of the University of Buenos Aires and at the same time in the Faculty of Exact Sciences. In 2010 she retired. She also taught at the Belgrano University. In 1995 she was appointed director of the Center for Mathematics and Design at the University of Buenos Aires. In April 2005, de Spinadel founded the Laboratory for Mathematics & Design, on the university campus in Buenos Aires. From 1998 until her death she was the President of the International Association for Mathematics and Design. Every three years the association organized international congresses and meetings and published the magazine Mathematik & Design . De Spinadel has authored ten books and published more than 100 research papers.

She dealt with mathematics and design and generalized the golden ratio to other ratios given by irrational numbers (she assigned the names of other "metallic" name variants such as "silver") and became internationally known for this. She published books on chaos theory and fractals .
