White River Junction station with museum train

White River Junction is a municipality ( village ) in the state of Vermont in the United States with 2,286 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census). White River Junction is politically and administratively dependent on Hartford , in whose parish it is located.

The place is at the confluence of the White River in the Connecticut River on the west side of the river course. Across the river is the small town of Hanover with the renowned Dartmouth College , both of which are, however, already in the area of the state of New Hampshire .

Around 1793 , a ferry across Connecticut was set up on the site of what is now Lyman's Point . In 1803 the ferry was replaced by a fixed bridge over the Connecticut River, and in 1815 another bridge over the White River. Both bridges were operated by the former ferryman Elias Lyman. Until the construction of the first railway line, this ferry and bridge house remained the only settlement at this point.

Between 1847 and 1849, the routes of four different railway companies ( Central Vermont Railway , Connecticut River Railroad , Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad and Northern New Hampshire Railroad ) were connected at the confluence of the White River in the Connecticut River , making the community the largest railway junction in Vermont made. At times, up to 50 passenger trains stopped here every day. In 1863 another route was connected here by the Woodstock Railway .

Between 1890 and 1928 (with the exception of the period from 1901 to 1906) the Twin State Fair , a major fair, was held annually for one week in an open space above the city . For this purpose, a 950 meter long railway line was built that drove visitors from the station to the exhibition center and was only operated during the exhibition week: the Fair Grounds Railroad . After the end of the trade fairs, the railway line was also shut down.

Since the railroad's demise in the United States in the 1960s, the place's importance has declined sharply. The station is still in operation today and is connected to Washington DC daily by the Amtrak express train '' The Vermonter '' . In addition, Interstates 89 and 91 intersect on the southern outskirts . The highways 4 and 5 pass through on a common road section the place.

Large parts of the city center have been listed as historical monuments since 1980. A railway museum has also been located in the station. Today the city is trying to gain a reputation as an artist city with many galleries and an art school on site.
