history

The town of Wentworth was named either after Thomas Fermor, Earl of Pomfret , with whom he was married, or after the town of Pomfret, Connecticut, from which most of the first settlers came. The town's first meeting also took place there on July 23, 1761. The first settlers settled in Pomfret from 1769, after the land had previously been divided among the beneficiaries of the Grant. The allocation was made through a raffle for the lots.
In 1976, John Paul II , then still a cardinal, visited his long-time friend Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka in Pomfret, who lived there with her family.
Religions
A first meeting house was built on the Chandler family farm as early as 1774, and the first priest, Reverend Aaron Hutchinson, was hired in 1780. A congregation of the Congregational Church was founded in 1783. Other religious communities were added later. Baptists , Methodists and other Christian communities.
