The Fair Grounds Railroad (also Fair Ground Railroad ) was a railway company in Vermont ( United States ). They only operated a 950 meter long route.

History and operation

The rail company was formed when the Twin State Fair was first held in 1890 on a site west of White River Junction . The city is in the valley of the Connecticut River and White River . Since the space in the valley was limited, a plateau west of the city was used for the fair. A railway line was built for the connection, which branched off from the White River Junction – Woodstock railway at the Hilton Junction junction . The trains had to drive backwards from the White River Junction station in order to be able to enter the route forwards, as the topographical situation meant that only one branch off from Woodstock was possible. The line officially went into operation on September 1, 1890. The railway company and the route belonged to the operators of the fair.

Since the Woodstock Railroad had insufficient rolling stock , the Central Vermont Railroad provided the necessary vehicles. Nevertheless, the railway was independent throughout its existence. The fair took place annually in September and lasted one week. The railway was not operated at the other times. The fair was canceled from 1901 to 1906, during which time there was no traffic on the railway line. After the last fair took place in 1928 on what is now the built-up area, the route was closed.
