Chauncey Wells Brownell (born October 7, 1847 in Williston , Vermont , † February 4, 1938 , ibid) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1890 to 1898 .

Life

Chauncey Wells Brownell was born in Williston, Vermont. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1870 and then attended Albany Law School until graduation in 1872. He earned his Masters in 1873.

Brownell set up a law practice in Burlington . He was also active in the local economy, including a seat on the board of directors of the Burlington electric street railway . He was a vice president of City's Home Savings Bank and president of Burlington Mutual Fire Insurance Company .

As a member of the Vermont sister party of the Republican Party , he was Burlington Grand Juror for two years and District Attorney of Chittenden County for four years . From 1874 to 1880 he was Deputy Secretary of the Vermont Senate and Secretary of the Senate from 1880 to 1890. Brownell was elected Secretary of State in 1890 and his term lasted until 1898.

In 1900 Brownell was elected Senior Man in Burlington. He was elected to the Vermont Senate for another term in 1902 and was named President Pro Tempore.

He was married to Elva Maria Brigham Brownell (1850-1920) and the couple had three children.

Brownell died in Williston on February 4, 1938. His grave is in Burlington Lakeview Cemetery.
