Deborah Markowitz

Deborah Markowitz (born September 14, 1961 in Tarrytown , New York ) is an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1999 to 2011 . She was the second woman in this position, but the first to be elected to this office.

Life

Deborah Markowitz was born in Tarrytown, New York. She received her bachelor's degree in 1983 from the University of Vermont and her doctorate in law with honors magna cum laude in 1987 from Georgetown University Law Center. She then worked from 1987 to 1988 as the clerk of Judge Louis Peck at the Vermont Supreme Court . She joined the Langrock, Sperry, Parker and Wool legal practice in 1988 as an attorney . She stayed until 1990. After founding the Vermont League of Cities and Towns Municipal Law Center in 1990, she was the center’s first director and authored various books and writings on local law, as well as lectures on local and national municipal law and ethics In the government. Her publications include the Citizen's Guide to Town Meeting and the Moderators Handbook , for city and community assemblies.

As a member of the Democratic Party , Markowitz held various offices. She has served on the Girl Scout Council , the Central Vermont Community Action Agency, and the Vermont Women's Business Center Advisory Board . In 1998, Markowitz was elected the 37th Secretary of State of Vermont, making it the second woman in office after Helen E. Burbank , but the first woman to be elected to that office after Helen E. Burbank had resigned Predecessor was appointed Secretary of State for the transition period. Deborah Markowitz served as President of the National Association of Secretaries of State in 2006 and was appointed to the Advisory Board of the National Election Assistance Commission .

During her tenure as Secretary of State, she founded the Safe at Home program , an aid program for victims of domestic violence, rape, or stalking. Her office helped people who saw themselves being followed by the associated public records and the most vulnerable victims could use their office address as their address and then the mail would be forwarded to a confidential location. She also worked as a lawyer for women in leadership positions, as she believes that women in leadership positions are an asset. Markowitz is the founder of the Women's Leadership Initiative , which supports women running for public office.

In 2010, she applied for her party's nomination for election to governor of Vermont , but only finished third in the primary . Was nominated Peter Shumlin , who then won the election. In January 2011, Markowotz was named Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources by Governor Shumlin , the agency responsible for protecting the environment, natural resources, wildlife, forests and state parks of Vermont.

Deborah Markowitz is married, the couple live in Montpelier , Vermont and have three children.
