Aaron Hinman Grout (born January 18, 1879 in Rock Island , Illinois , † December 29, 1966 in Burlington , Vermont ) was an American lawyer , judge and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1923 to 1927 .

Life

Aaron H. Grout was born in Rock Island, Illinois to Governor Josiah Grout and Harriet Hinman Grout. His uncle was Congressman William W. Grout .

Grout grew up in Derby and Newport and graduated from Derby Academy in 1896.

In 1893 he joined the National Guard . He joined the 1st Vermont Infantry Regiment as a private . He reached the rank of corporal before he was appointed captain to assist the brigade commander General Julius J. Estey . During the Spanish-American War , he assisted Estey in the organization and drafting of the National Guard soldiers who formed the 1st Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment . He left the National Guard in 1901.

Grout graduated from the University of Vermont in 1901 after studying law . He was admitted to the bar in 1904. He worked in Newport, first in the Young and Young legal practice, and later as a partner with his father.

A member of the Republican Party , Grout served as a messenger in the governor's office during his father's tenure from 1896 to 1898. During the tenure of Governor Fletcher D. Proctor from 1906 to 1908, he was the governor's executive clerk and served as a secretary from 1908 to 1910 for civil and military affairs, thus as Chief Assistant to Governor George H. Prouty .

Grout was Chairman of the Republican Assembly of Orleans County in 1908 and a delegate to the Republican Party Assembly in 1908 and 1910, he was also President of the Newport Republican Club in 1908 and 1910. From 1912 to 1916 Grout was District Attorney for Orleans County, an office which his two uncles Theophilus and William Grout held before him.

While working for Governor Prouty, Grout was also a major military secretary and he continued his military service after 1910 as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the Vermont National Guard.

During World War I he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Vermont State Guard , a unit established to carry out National Guard duties domestically while the soldiers were deployed abroad.

Grout was a Member of the House of Representatives from Vermont from 1922 to 19923. When Harry A. Black Secretary of State of Vermont died in office in 1923 , Grout was temporarily installed to fill the void. He was elected to a regular term in 1924 and re-elected in 1926. He held the office from his appointment in April 1923 until his resignation in 1927. Grout resigned from the office of Secretary of State, returned to Burlington, and became treasurer and general manager of Vermont Acceptance Corporation , a company that provides loans for the Forgiven purchase of apartments, cars and other things.

From 1933 to 1941 Grout was a judge at the district court in Burlington.

Grout was a member of the Congregationalist denomination , as well as the fraternity The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry . He was a member of the Lac Memphrémagog Yacht Club, President of the Rotary Club of Burlington and the Kappa Sigma Association. As an active member of the Freemasons , he reached the 33rd rank of the Scottish Rite and served as the Grand Master of Vermont.

In 1907, Grout married Edith Goddard Hart. Her daughters included Eleanor (1911–1937) and Nancy (1913–1987).

Aaron H. Grout died in Burlington on December 29, 1966. His grave is in Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington.

His home at 370 Main Street in Burlington was built in 1881. It still stands today and has been sold and rebuilt several times. The Lang House Bed & Breakfast has been located in the house since 2000.
