Benjamin W. Dean

Benjamin W. Dean (* 1827 in Grafton , Vermont ; † July 6, 1864 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1857 to 1861 .

Life

Dean was born in Grafton, Vermont to Peter W. Dean and Philinda Willey. His father owned a wool factory there. In 1848 he graduated from Dartmouth College . He then attended New York State and National Law School in Ballston Spa , New York . After he was admitted to the bar, he opened a law firm in Bellows Falls , Vermont, but later moved back to Grafton.

A member of the Vermont sister party of the Republican Party , Dean was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1857 to 1861. Benjamin Dean created the 1763 version of the original Grafton homeowner's map and demarcation. His card is still in use today. Dean was a Baptist and was inducted into the Grafton Ward at the age of 11.

Benjamin W. Dean was married to Angie Dean (1823–1871). The couple had three daughters. Dean died on July 6, 1864 in Grafton, his grave is in Grafton Village Cemetery.
