Charles Marsh

Charles Marsh (born July 10, 1765 in Lebanon , New London County , Connecticut Colony , †  January 11, 1849 in Woodstock , Vermont ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Marsh came to Hartford with his parents as early as 1773 . He initially enjoyed a private education and then studied until 1786 at Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ). After studying law in Litchfield and being admitted to the bar in 1788, he began working in this profession in Woodstock. Between 1797 and 1801, Marsh was a federal attorney for the Vermont district.

Marsh was a member of the Federalist Party . In the congressional elections of 1814 he was elected as their candidate in the fifth district of Vermont in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Richard Skinner on March 4, 1815 . By March 3, 1817, Marsh served a term in Congress . During his time in the federal capital, he founded the American Colonization Society .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Marsh returned to practice as a lawyer. From 1809 to 1849 he was also the curator of Dartmouth College. Charles Marsh was the father of George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882), who represented the third constituency of Vermont in Congress between 1843 and 1849.
