history

Eden was proclaimed for settlement on November 7th, 1780 and on August 28th, 1781 by the governor of Vermont, Thomas Chittenden , a number of officers and soldiers from the "continental war" transferred in recognition of their services. The first settlement took place from 1800, on March 31, 1802 the constituent city assembly was held. Only a small part of the land, especially in the west of the municipality, can be used as arable land; the other areas are often suitable for pasture. By 1840, Eden was particularly famous for its beef cattle, which are said to have supplied the best Vermont beef.

The first parish hall was built in 1832 and was used equally by all local parishes for worship.

During the American Civil War, 82 men from Eden served in the Army of the Northern States; of these, 18 died in the field, in hospital or in captivity and six were seriously injured.

Belvidere Mountain, according to the lore of the early inhabitants, was already mined by copper mines before it was settled by the English. Asbestos was industrially mined here between 1936 and 1975 . It left around 2.7 million t of residues. In 2008, the State of Vermont warned all residents of Eden and those in neighboring cities that there was a "health hazard" to people living within a ten-mile radius of the mine. In April 2009, the Vermont Department of Health published a revised study which found that all deaths associated with the asbestos mine occurred in former employees. The report also found that people who live near the mine are not at increased risk of developing diseases caused by asbestos compared to other people living in Vermont.
