North Bennington is a village in the town of Bennington in Bennington County , Vermont in the United States with 1643 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location

North Bennington is in the northwest of the town of Bennington. Shaftsbury borders with Lake Paran to the north , the water of which flows through the town in Paran Creek in a southerly direction and has already been dammed several times in the past for the operation of mills before it flows into the Walloomsac River , which borders the village in the south. In the west runs the border with the state of New York . Bennington College is to the south .

history

Park-McCullough Historic House

The village developed after the settlement of the town due to its good location in the valley of the Paran Creek . Its water was initially dammed up for the operation of grist and wood mills, later paper mills and the furniture industry were added. Cushman Furniture produced here and sold its products throughout the country. Today several larger companies are located in North Bennington. Some of the best known include National Hanger Company , PortaBrace, and Sterling Gun Drills .

North Bennington also developed into a center for artists and writers. The writer Shirley Jackson lived in North Bennington and wrote her book The Lottery here . The writer Jamica Kincaid , the writer Robert Frost and the painter Kenneth Noland also lived in North Bennington.

The North Bennington Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has a size of 112 acres (45.32 hectares ). An important building is the Park-McCullough Historic House with its 36 rooms. In 2009 the HC White site in the south of the village was added to the National Register.

North Bennington is connected to other cities in Vermont by the North Bennington – Chatham railway. The Vermont State Route 67 and in its extension, the Vermont State Route 67A run north to south through the Village.

Public facilities

The 99 bed hospital for Bennington and the neighboring communities, the Southwestern Medical Center , is located in the Village of North Bennington. In addition to the usual facilities, it includes a rehabilitation center for heart diseases with 150 beds and the regional cancer center. It is the medical center for 70,000 people.

education

North Bennington is part of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union with Bennington, Pownal, Shaftsbury and Woodford .

There are four elementary schools in Bennington, supplemented by a middle and high school. The offer is expanded by two vocational schools. The Bennington College in North Bennington provides advanced training in various artistic professions and z. Taught some famous artists from literature, sculpture and painting.
