Sandgate is a town in Bennington County , Vermont , United States with 405 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location
Sandgate is located in northwest Bennington County, on the border with New York State in the Green Mountains . There are only a few small rivers in the area of the town, they all flow into the Batten Kill and only a few smaller lakes. The largest is Lake Madeleine in the east of the town. The highest point in the hilly area is the 1007 m high Bear Mountain .

history
The Sandgate Grant was awarded on August 11, 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Grants . The settlement started in 1769, the first settler was Reuben Thomas and his family from Woodbury, Connecticut. The first child born in the town was the son Samuel. It is unknown when the town's constituent assembly took place, early records are in poor condition, many pages are missing. Probably in the years 1781 or 1782, however. The complete records from 1790 to 1804 are available. Reuben Thomas not only represented the town in the Vermont legislature, he also served in other town public offices for many years.
