Heinrich Hartz (born September 14, 1886 in Kaiserslautern , † October 1, 1965 in Landau in the Palatinate ) was a German Catholic priest.

Life

Hartz attended the humanistic grammar school in Kaiserslautern, studied theology in Innsbruck and was ordained a priest on July 31, 1910 in Speyer . His first Mass he celebrated on August 7 of the same year in Deidesheim because his mother came from this place. After working as a chaplain in various places, he worked as a pastor in Niedersimten , Ramstein and Ludwigshafen am Rhein in the parish of St. Josef. From May 10, 1940 he was pastor in Deidesheim.

Hartz was critical of the National Socialist rulers; He was denounced several times by the local group leader for this, but this had no consequences for him. It became dangerous for Hartz towards the end of the Second World War, when American troops stood directly in front of Deidesheim. Deidesheim citizens had hoisted a white flag on the tower of the Deidesheim parish church , whereupon the SS wanted to get hold of Pastor Hartz, who was not involved in the action. However, he was able to flee by bike to Bad Dürkheim , which was already occupied by the Americans .

For many years Hartz was the library representative in the Diocese of Speyer . He wrote many writings on the history of Deidesheim and its parish church and was the first dean of the Deidesheim deanery, which existed from 1956 to 1979.

Hartz was appointed clerical councilor in 1942 and papal secret chamberlain in 1961 . He bore the title of “ prelate ” and hosted numerous ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries. On his 70th birthday the city of Deidesheim made him an honorary citizen; in the same year he was also awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . Hartz was also honored by the city of Deidesheim with a street dedication: "Prälat-Hartz-Straße" in the west of the city is named after him.

After he retired in spring 1965, he still worked in Hinterweidenthal at his own request .
