Geographical location

The community is located in the border triangle Vermont - Massachusetts - New York and is thus the most south-westerly town in Vermont. The landscape is characterized by its location in the transition area between the Green Mountains in the northeast and the Berkshire Mountains in the south. The Hoosic River flows through the city ; highest point is the 429 m high Mann Hill . The Green Mountain National Forest joins in the northeast .

history

The current parish of Pownal was proclaimed on January 8, 1760 by the Governor of New Hampshire , Benning Wentworth , as part of the New Hampshire Grants and settled from 1862. However, the area had already been partially reclaimed by some Dutch settler families from 1824 and was later declared for settlement by the governor of New York under the Hoosick patent . The settlement that began in 1862 was primarily carried out by settlers who had also paid for the second land defined by New York on the same property. The settlers came mainly from the states of Rhode Island and New York .

Because of occasional Indian raids in the area, Wentworth had two forts built in the area; However, individual attacks were reported up until the 1770s. A first church was built in 1789 in Pownal Center , the core of the settlement.

Due to the natural resources and fertility of the soil, Pownal was the third largest parish of Bennington Counties and the fifth largest parish in Vermont by 1790. It was connected with its own station during the construction of the Greenfield – Troy railway line and thus had a direct connection to Boston and the Great Lakes from 1875 after the completion of the Hoosac Tunnel , the longest tunnel in the USA outside the Rocky Mountains. This gave the local economy a boost through expanded markets; However, the community was never able to develop into a tourist attraction. The connection in Pownal continues to this day, but has only been operated as a freight railway since the mid-1960s.

The Mountain Meadow Preserve is an approximately 0.7 km² nature reserve in the border area to Massachusetts, which is characterized by hot springs and pristine fauna (coyotes, bears, etc.).
