Ys is the second studio album by the American singer-songwriter and folk musician Joanna Newsom . It was released in November 2006 on the indie label Drag City and was produced by Van Dyke Parks and Newsom. It is named after the mythical city of the same name in Brittany .

style

The album contains five pieces over a playing time of just over 55 minutes. Musically it moves between contemporary folk and chamber music . and Newsom's voice and harp play are in the foreground , but a 29-piece orchestra is also used in four of the five songs. Van Dyke Parks, producer of the album alongside Newsom, also plays the accordion.

Rock musician and former Big Black front man Steve Albini was involved in the recording as a sound engineer .

Ys received mostly very good reviews from the press. The renowned music critic Robert Christgau , on the other hand, only gave the album an average grade of C + and the trade magazine Rolling Stone only gave it 2 out of 5 stars. The album's metascore is 85 out of 100 possible points.

Pitchfork Media voted Ys 83rd out of the 200 best albums of the 2000s. In the selection of the 100 best albums from 1969 to 2009 by the German music magazine Musikexpress , it reached number 92.

The album was included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize.
