Manchester is a village in the town of Manchester in Bennington County in the state of Vermont in the United States with 749 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census). The Village Manchester is centrally located in the Town of Manchester. Manchester Center borders to the north and the Batten Kill runs along the eastern border of the village. The center of the village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It includes 65 buildings that contribute to the protection status and 19 buildings that do not belong to it and covers an area of around 90 hectares . The heart of the Historic District is the Equinox House, protected as a single building .
history
The Grant for Manchester was awarded on August 11, 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth . It comprised 26,240 acres (10,619 hectares ). Settlement in the village began in 1761. Until 1850, the core of the village consisted of many inns and taverns. With the opening of the Equinox House, the image of the village changed and more and more tourists came to Manchester. The oldest marble sidewalk from 1850 has been preserved.
