Benjamin Say
Benjamin Say (born August 28, 1755 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , † April 23, 1813 there ) was an American politician . In 1808 and 1809 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Benjamin Say attended the Friend Schools and then studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia until 1780 . In this city he then practiced as a doctor and pharmacist. At times he also took part in the War of Independence . In 1787 he was one of the founders of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia . Between 1791 and 1809 he was the treasurer of this educational establishment. Say was also a member of the Pennsylvania Prison Society and President of the Pennsylvania Humane Society . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1799 and 1801 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .
After the resignation of MP Joseph Clay , Say was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the first Pennsylvania seat , where he took up his new mandate on November 16, 1808. After a re-election he could remain in Congress until his resignation in June 1809 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Benjamin Say no longer appeared politically. He died in Philadelphia on April 23, 1813. His son Thomas (1787-1827) became a respected entomologist .
