Jacob Richards

Jacob Richards (born 1773 near Chester , Province of Pennsylvania , †  July 20, 1816 there ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1809 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Richards studied at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia until 1794 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1795, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the congressional elections of 1802 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Michael Leib on March 4, 1803 . After two re-elections, he was able to hold three legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1809complete. During his tenure as Congressman in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Jefferson, the United States was significantly expanded. In 1804 the twelfth amendment was ratified.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Jacob Richards practiced as a lawyer again. He also became a colonel in the Delaware County Militia . He died near Chester on July 20, 1816.
