John Edward Heys (2013)

John Edward Heys (born April 24, 1948 in New Jersey ) is an American actor and director. He lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Born in New Jersey, he moved to Miami Shores, Florida, to live with his mother's family after his parents died. After completing his master's degree at the local college, he moved to New York City in 1967 . Here he became active in alternative culture and the gay scene in the East Village and West Village . In 1969 he founded the bi-weekly newspaper Gay Power and was its editor for the first 24 issues until 1970. Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the designers of the front pages . In terms of content, the magazine comprised art, eroticism and a wide range of articles by conservative and radical representatives of the gay and lesbian scene in the USA at the time. One of the illustrators was Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland .

He conceived a number of one-man shows and starred in plays with Cookie Mueller , HM Koutoukis and Charles Ludlam . John Edward Heys has been portrayed by a number of different artists, including numerous photographs by Peter Hujar and watercolors by Francesco Clemente . In Berlin, John Edward Heys was in close contact with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf , the artist group Die Tödliche Doris and the gay activist Napoleon Seyfarth . His films have been shown at numerous festivals.
