The West Village is the western part of the Greenwich Village neighborhood in the New York borough of Manhattan .

location

Although there are no hard and fast boundaries, the neighborhood is said to extend from 14th Street to Houston Street and from the Hudson River to Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue , respectively . The adjacent neighborhoods are Chelsea to the north, South Village and Hudson Square to the south, and the eastern part of Greenwich Village to the east. The quarter consists mainly of apartments with a variety of small restaurants, shops and services.

history

Some 19th century streets in the West Village are quite narrow compared to other streets in New York City

Since 1916 under the name "Little Bohemia" known, one can still see that the West Village was once a center of bohemian was on the West Side - with classical artists - Lofts ( Westbeth Artists Community ) and the new residential high-rise buildings of the famous New York architect Richard Meier facing the Hudson River (173-176 Perry Street ). Despite the recent gentrification of the area, the area still retains some residual artistic flair .

An important event in the history of the emancipation of homosexuals occurred in the West Village: At that time the police repeatedly carried out violent raids on pubs with a homosexual audience until the first uprising of homosexuals and other sexual minorities against police arbitrariness: In the bar Stonewall Inn in the On Christopher Street , the so-called Stonewall Uprising took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 . Street battles between homosexuals and the police continued for days. Every summer this event is celebrated with Christopher Street Day - now in many cities around the world.

The High Line is a green space that connects the West Village with the art galleries in northern Chelsea. The former elevated railway line that runs parallel to Tenth Avenue has been converted into a public green space. Goods used to be brought into the city via this route, but it has been out of service for a long time. Instead of tearing this structure down, the city decided to leave the structure standing and convert it into a park.

Urban structure

The streets of the neighborhood fall out of the usual Manhattan grid as they slope at an angle to other Manhattan streets, sometimes confusing both tourists and New Yorkers. The streets were laid parallel or vertically to the Hudson River before the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 laid down the general urban structure in the familiar rectangular grid for the following parts of the city.

Even streets that were assigned numbers in the 19th century in order to fit them into the grid are sometimes more confusing than they create clarity. West 4th Street (formerly Asylum Street) crosses West 10th Street , West 11th Street and West 12th Street to end at the intersection with West 13th Street . Further north towards Greenwich Street, three blocks separate West 12th Street from Little West 12th Street , which is the other way around one block south of West 13th Street.

The image of the Meatpacking District (or “Gansevoort Historic District”) at the northern end of this quarter is now characterized by trendy boutiques and nightclubs. The Far West Village is also part of the West Village and extends from the Hudson River to Hudson Street .
