The Stonewall Inn is a bar in Christopher Street (between West 4th St. and Waverly Place) in the district of Greenwich Village in New York City , aimed at a gay oriented target audience.

Two two-story brick houses were built in 1843 and 1846 on the lots at 51-53 Christopher Street. After countless renovations, the two were combined into one restaurant in the 1930s . In the 1950s it was known as the Stonewall Inn Restaurant. It closed for renovation in 1966 and reopened a year later as the private club Stonewall Inn, a bar and dance hall . Like many shops in the area, it was intended for the gay community of Greenwich Village .

Inside and outside the Stonewall Inn began on the night of Friday, June 27 to Saturday, June 28, 1969 to 1:20 of the Stonewall riots , which lasted intermittently until July 3. Regular police raids with the recording of personal details and insults of the guests were the trigger for the first serious resistance of gays to arbitrary discriminatory treatment by the state and thus the beginning of the lesbian and gay movement . The uprising had an immediate effect. There were further protests in early July, and a month later, on July 27, a group of lesbians and gays organized the first Gay March from Washington Square to the Stonewall Inn. A year later, the first Gay Pride parades took place in New York and other cities.

The name “Stonewall” and Christopher Street are used internationally today to denote events of the LGBT community. Every year during the Gay Pride parade, a crowd gathers in front of the Stonewall Inn. On June 27, 1999, the Stonewall Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its special historical significance for the history of lesbians and gays . Since February 16, 2000 the bar has the status of a National Historic Landmark .

On June 24, 2016 , President Obama dedicated the Stonewall National Monument . The National Monument- type memorial is opposite the building in Christopher Park. The National Monument includes the Stonewall Inn and Christopher Park, a historic community park at the intersection of Christopher Street, West 4th Street, and Grove Street directly across from the Stonewall Inn. The monument covers approximately 7.7 acres of land, including the surrounding streets and sidewalks, on which the 1969 Stonewall Rising took place. The Stonewall National Monument is the first US national monument honoring LGBT rights. Support is provided by the National Park Service . The National Park Foundation started a collection in 2016 to raise $ 2 million for a ranger station, visitor center, community activities, and exhibits.
