Houston Street
The Houston Street [ haʊstən ] is an East - West -Hauptverkehrsader in Lower Manhattan in New York City . It runs across the entire width through the borough of Manhattan , from Pier 40 on the Hudson River through the Port Authority Truck Terminal on Greenwich Street to the East River , and serves as the border between the districts of Greenwich Village and SoHo (“ So uth of Ho Uston Street ") on the West Side, and between the East Village and the Lower East Side to the East Side . The numerical grid for street naming, introduced as part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 , begins immediately north of Houston Street.

- Houston Street is named after William Houstoun , an MP from Georgia , and not after Sam Houston , after whom the Texas city of Houston was named - hence the different pronunciation.
- Since 1888, the famous is Sandwichbar Katz's Delicatessen (on kosher style deli ) in the street. Also known from the movie Harry and Sally .
- Nikola Tesla founded his Houston Street Laboratory in 1891 . Much of his research was lost in a fire in 1895.
