Eiki Nestor

Eiki Nestor (born September 5, 1953 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician of the Estonian Social Democratic Party . As minister, he was entrusted with various tasks and from March 2014 to April 2019 he was President of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

Life

Early years

Eiki Nestor graduated from the 1st Middle School in Tallinn in 1971 . In 1976 he completed his engineering studies at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute ( Estonian Tallinna Polütehniline Instituut ). From 1976 to 1982 he was department head of a vehicle depot in Keila , from 1982 to 1989 chief inspector for occupational safety of the Estonian road construction union. From 1989 to 1992, Eiki Nestor was first deputy chairman and then chairman of the Estonian Road Builders Union before moving into active politics.

In 1992 Nestor became a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) and joined the Social Democratic Party in 1993 . From November 1994 to April 1995 he was Minister without Portfolio in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andres Tarand . He was responsible for regional issues within the Estonian government.

In the next term, the Social Democrats were not part of the government. But since he was able to defend his mandate, Eiki Nestor sat again as a member of the Riigikogu from 1995 to 1999 and briefly took over the office of party leader of the Estonian Social Democrats in 1995/96. From 1996 to 1999 he was also a member of the city council of the Estonian capital.

After the parliamentary elections in Estonia in 1999, he held the post of Minister for Social Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar until January 2002 . After leaving the government, he returned as a member of parliament and was able to defend his mandate in the 2003 and 2007 elections.

He also succeeded in doing this in the 2011 parliamentary elections . After the breakup of the Ansip III coalition government , Eiki Nestor was elected President of Parliament by the new social-liberal government coalition in March 2014 . After the elections in spring 2015 , he was confirmed in office by the new parliament on March 30th. In the general election in 2019 his party had to accept losses and Nestor did not manage to defend his parliamentary mandate.

Eiki Nestor is married and has two sons.
