Charles Ogle (* 1798 in Somerset , Pennsylvania ; †  May 10, 1841 there ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Ogle was the son of Congressman Alexander Ogle (1766-1832) and the uncle of another Congressman named Andrew Jackson Ogle (1822-1852). He attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1822, he began to work in Somerset in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Anti-Masonic Party .

In the 1836 congressional elections , Ogle was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Job Mann on March 4, 1837 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 10, 1841 . He joined the Whigs in the late 1830s . Between 1839 and 1841 he was chairman of the Road and Canal Committee.

Charles Ogle achieved national importance in April 1840 with a three-day speech before Congress, in which he massively attacked the incumbent Democratic US President Martin Van Buren and accused him, among other things, of large-scale waste. This speech went down in Congress history as the Gold Spoon Oration because, among other things, Ogle claimed that the President would eat with golden spoons in the White House . The background to the speech was the presidential election campaign of 1840 . In terms of content, Ogle's allegations were baseless. But they were immediately picked up by his party and distributed nationwide. At that time, the country had not yet recovered from the recession of 1837 and such claims caught the ears of the partially suffering population. Thus Ogle had contributed not insignificantly to the election victory of William Henry Harrison . This died a month after taking office, Charles Ogle again a month later.
