John Klingensmith

John Klingensmith Jr. (born March 26, 1786 in Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania , †  February 8, 1854 there ) was an American politician . Between 1835 and 1839 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about John Klingensmith's youth and schooling. Between 1819 and 1822 and again from 1828 to 1831 he served as sheriff in Westmoreland County. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 . Between 1831 and 1835 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .

In the 1834 congressional election , Klingensmith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Richard Coulter on March 4, 1835 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1839 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Klingensmith worked as a secretary at the Pennsylvania State Land Office between 1839 and 1842 . He died on February 8, 1854.
