Arnold Plumer

Arnold Plumer (born June 6, 1801 in Cooperstown , Venango County , Pennsylvania , †  April 28, 1869 in Franklin , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 and again from 1841 to 1843 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arnold Plumer enjoyed a private primary school education and then attended secondary schools. In 1823 he became a sheriff in Venango County. Between 1830 and 1836 he worked as a court usher in this district. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1836 , Plumer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 25th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Galbraith on March 4, 1837 . Until March 3, 1839 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . Then the mandate fell back to his predecessor Galbraith. From 1839 to 1841, Plumer was US Marshal for western Pennsylvania.

In the elections of 1840 he was re-elected to Congress in the 25th district of his state, where he replaced Galbraith on March 4, 1841. Until March 3, 1843, he was able to spend another legislative period in the US House of Representatives. That period was fraught with tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

In 1847 and 1848 Arnold Plumer was again US Marshal for western Pennsylvania. In 1848 he became State Treasurer of Pennsylvania. In his private life he worked in the mining and banking industries. He died on April 28, 1869 in Franklin, where he was also buried.
