Robert Hanna Hammond
Robert Hanna Hammond (born April 28, 1791 in Milton , Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , † June 2, 1847 on the high seas ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Robert Hammond attended public schools in his home country and then worked in commerce. He became a member of the state militia and reached the rank of brigadier general. In 1817 he joined the United States Army as a lieutenant . After his voluntary retirement from the army, he returned to Milton and was employed in the administration in Northumberland County there. Between 1833 and 1837 he was a postman in Milton. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .
In the 1836 congressional election , Hammond was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joseph Biles Anthony on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 .
After serving in the US House of Representatives, Robert Hammond rejoined the US Army. He was paymaster during the Mexican-American War . He was wounded in the process and taken home on a ship. He died of his injuries while on board on June 2, 1847 and was buried in Milton.
