Career

John Snyder was the son of Governor Simon Snyder (1758-1819). He attended the public schools in his home country. During the British-American War he was a captain in the Pennsylvania State Militia. Professionally, he later worked in paper manufacture and in the oil business. Among other things, he worked for the Snyder Spring Oil Co. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1840 congressional election , Snyder was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Robert Hanna Hammond on March 4, 1841 . Since he was not confirmed in 1842, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1843 . That period was fraught with tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, John Snyder resumed his previous activities. He died on August 15, 1850 in his hometown of Selinsgrove, where he was also buried.
