Lemuel Paynter

Lemuel Paynter (born 1788 in Lewes , Delaware , †  August 1, 1863 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lemuel Paynter attended the public schools in his home country and then moved to Philadelphia. During the British-American War of 1812 he served in the Pennsylvania State Militia, where he rose to lieutenant colonel. Paynter was a member and intermittent chairman of the Southwark District Governing Council for many years . He also served as the school director for a while. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party founded in 1828 . In 1833 he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate.

In the congressional election of 1836 Paynter was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joel Barlow Sutherland on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 . In 1840 he renounced another candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Paynter was again a member of the Governing Council of the Southwark District . He died on August 1, 1863 in Philadelphia, where he was also buried.
